Zaran Rooftop – Stylish Drinks & Japanese Food

Two weeks ago Foodmonster_Jo, a very active and honest foodie, and me were invited to Zaran Rooftop, located between 3rd and 4th circle near the embassies right above Lucca Steakhouse. It is a Japanese themed, stylish rooftop that offers a variety of drinks and a selection of Japanese dishes. The place opened just recently, it is very modern and offers seating on bar stools, normal tables and at the bar. We came fairly early and were one of the few only guests, although the place is not too huge. Staff was welcoming and friendly.

Before I get into the food, I should highlight that Zaran Rooftop is rather a place for drinks or just to chill and enjoy the view than for really hungry nights. However, they offer a really interesting variety of Japanese dishes, some of them I never tried before, or at least not that way. We started with Assorted Mezze, some rice crackers which tasted a bit like these Asian shrimp crackers, but less fishy and much better. They were light and we dipped them into the creamy, foamy Hummus. This came together with the Eggplant Miso. All together, this was a nice sensory introduction and a great combination of Japanese and Levantine cuisine. Also we had Ceviche, which is Seabass seasoned with Lemon Juice Chili and Caviar. It was topped with caramelized green onion, I believe. I enjoyed the great combination of sour and spicy while the sweet flavored green onion gave it something special. Definitely, something new for me and a great alternative to normal sushi or alike.

After the starters we were offered Yakitoro, Chicken Skewers with Sesame and Yakiniku, Beef Skewers with green bell peppers and sesame as well. The skewers could have been more juicy for sure, but the flavors were nice. The Shrimp Tempura however, were really yummy. You can dip them into Soy Sauce if you like or take some of the ginger and reddish (it was I believe). Along with the food I chose a Rose from JR Wines, while my counterpart had a Virgin Berry Cocktail. Jordan River Wines make really great Wines in my opinion. If you haven’t tried their Wines, yet, make sure to pay a visit to the JR Wine Experience at Abdali Boulevard.

We concluded our visit with a Matach, a chocolate lava cake served with a Lemon sorbet. This was both mouthwatering and hard to resist. A great combination of hot and cold and sweet and sour. An excellent finale. Summarizing everything, I think it is a great spot with a good location. The view is nice and relaxing although not spectacular as not really high up. The staff is nice and everything was clean. I would like to thank Zaran Rooftop and the team for the invitation to experience the great Japanese food.
